The Mental Health Crisis Fueled by Corrupt Governance: A Call for Change

Bismark Kwabla Kpobi, Executive Director of ASK Health Advocacy Foundation, has raised serious concerns about the detrimental impact of government corruption on the mental health of citizens. Despite being endowed with abundant natural resources such as gold, bauxite, timber, crude oil, and cocoa, the populace continues to suffer due to the self-serving and corrupt practices of government officials. These leaders, prioritizing their wealth over sustainable development and public welfare, have plunged the nation into socio-economic hardship, severely affecting the mental health of its citizens.

The pervasive incompetence and lack of foresight among government appointees have led to widespread stress, anxiety, and depression among the populace. As a result, many individuals turn to substance abuse to cope with suicidal thoughts and hunger. The negative effects of corrupt governance extend to societal issues such as marital breakdowns, high youth unemployment rates, and a decline in sexual health, with some resorting to dangerous aphrodisiacs that pose severe physical health risks, including organ damage and heart attacks.

Adding to the distress is the blatant disrespect and arrogance displayed by government officials, who often dismiss citizens as lazy or unqualified. Opportunities that once offered hope to the youth, such as careers in security services or positions in state institutions, now require substantial bribes or connections, further eroding the public’s trust and hope.

Citizens are left in a state of despair, their talents wasted in an environment that stifles their potential. Kpobi calls for a radical change in leadership behavior, emphasizing the need for accountability, maintenance of culture, and selfless governance to alleviate the suffering of the masses. He stresses the importance of mental health support, urging individuals not to succumb to despair or suicidal thoughts, but to seek help and remain safe.

Bismark Kwabla Kpobi concludes with a powerful plea: “One cannot attain total physical health without total mental health.” It is imperative for leaders to prioritize the well-being of the people and work towards creating a nation that values and uplifts every citizen.

Corruption: OSP announces toll-free line to assist Ghanaians report cases

    Corruption-OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has announced a toll-free line to enable all Ghanaians and other persons to call the office and report corruption-related matters for further actions to be taken.

The toll-free number, 0800-000-700 was announced on the official Twitter handle of the Office of the Special Prosecutor on Sunday, September 12.

This move, according to the OSP, is to further help in reducing the corruption menace the country is saddled with at the moment.

The OSP urged everyone to “be part of the solution” in the fight against corruption.

It is recalled that the Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng during his swearing-in by President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House on Thursday, August 5 vowed to substantially reduce corruption, which he said was one of two pandemics confronting the country currently.

“Mr. President, we are confronted by two pandemics. One is a health crisis and its outlook is very macabre. The other is not a health crisis but it is also a pandemic which is corruption itself and corruption-related activities.

“The zeal with which your administration has approached the fight in respect of the health crisis are also seen in respect of the other pandemic, which is corruption.

“And as I come into this office, I pledge to the people of Ghana as I said exactly two weeks ago that I am going to work assiduously with deliberation to suppress and repress corruption.”

Akufo-Addo has Fought Corruption To Public Satisfaction – Mustapha Hamid

Campaign Coordinator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has noted that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led administration has dealt with corruption to the barest minimum.

This, he believes, makes corruption no longer a big issue ahead of the upcoming election.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid pointed out recent surveys carried out by interest groups which indicated that most Ghanaians are less interested in corruption.

Joy News reported that the NPP campaign coordinator has expressed that President Akufo-Addo is fighting the menace.

“In all the surveys that have been done by all the reputable research institutions and democratic organisations in our country, including the CDD, the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana none of those surveys show that corruption is upper-most in the minds of the Ghanaian people.

“Now, we want to remind the Ghanaian people and Candidate John Dramani Mahama that the reason corruption was a central issue in 2016 and it is not in 2020 is because it is not a palpable path of the governance structure and system today,” he explained.

Dr Hamid who is also the Zongo and Inner City Development Minister also confirmed that government has commenced efforts to get the country’s share of the Airbus compensation repatriated to Ghana.

Corruption scandals can take Akufo-Addo to opposition – Ben Ephson

Corruption scandals in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led administration can take him to the opposition, Pollster and Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch Newspaper Mr. Benjamin Emmanuel Ephson has said.

According to Mr. Ephson, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) may be left off the hook due to that fact that, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has not been able to use it against the Akufo-Addo government as it happened otherwise in the 2016 elections.

“Yes it (corruption) will affect the NPP but unfortunately the NDC hasn’t been able to take advantage as the NPP did when Mahama was in power. The NDC has not been able to take the corruption allegations well against the NPP and that could be their own doing”. Mr. Ben Ephson said this in an interview with GBC radio programme Behind the News monitored by MyNewsGH.com.

Corruption pervasive under NPP – Alhassan Suhuyini

Member of Parliament for the Tamale North Constituency, says corruption has become pervasive under the incumbent government.

According to Alhassan Suhuyini, rather than diminishing, the fight against the canker has rather “grown wings” under the Akufo-Addo-led government.

“A lot of people who thought President Akufo-Addo and his government were going to fight against corruption have come to the conclusion that corruption has grown wings and has become bigger and more pervasive under this government.”

Mr Suhuyini’s comment comes on the heels of the report weeks ago from the Office of the Special Prosecutor indicting the former President, John Dramani Mahama as “Government official 1” in the Airbus bribery scandal.
