PPP flagbearer urges trust for EC

The presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has entreated political party leaders to have some level of trust in the electoral process for the sake of peace in the country.

Brigitte Dzogbenuku, however, called for a review of the 1992 Constitution to prevent the appointment of the Chair of the Electoral Commission by a political party in power.

“There are issues coming up about the non-transparency in the Electoral Commission and the fact the EC is in bed with some political party,” she noted.

“It’s a fundamental thing we have to deal with but we all need to have a certain level of trust in the process.

“Nonetheless, this should pave way for a review of the constitution so that no Electoral Commissioner is appointed by any particular government in power. We must go with a system that is trusted by any Ghanaian.”

Speaking to 3news.com after her visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the PPP presidential candidate admitted there is distrust in the EC.

  • PPP promises to pass Affirmative Action Bill when elected

PPP promises to pass Affirmative Action Bill when elected

The Progressive People’s Party has assured Ghanaians that it will pass the Affirmative Action Bill when voted into power in the forthcoming December polls.

The Bill, which has been drafted for over 15 years is yet to be passed into law despite advocacies by various groups.

The Bill seeks to eliminate gender inequalities and promote a progressive increase in active participation of women in public life from a minimum of 40% to parity of 50% by 2030 in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In an interview with Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed on the Road to Jubilee House programme on Radio Univers 105.7FM, presidential candidate for the party, Ms Brigitte Dzogbenuku, explained that it was necessary to increase the number of women in leadership positions because ‘they control the purse’.

“Ghana’s informal sector is predominantly women. Ghana’s economy is predominantly informal. I am a woman as well as we make up 51% of this country. We will need a lot more women in leadership because they control a lot of the purse. Here we are, we still haven’t passed the Affirmative Action Bill, PPP will pass the Bill and ensure that a lot more women move into places of leadership,” she said.

Meanwhile, she says that the PPP, when voted into office, will reduce have a relatively small government size as they would decentralize the government and make electorates involved in the development of their respective communities.

“For us, we won’t need 123 ministers, that is why we are saying you should vote for your DCEs and MMDCEs. That will cut out on the Regional Ministers and all their deputies. Because if you have your DCEs and MMDCEs, they have already taken up the communities there and imagine how much you would be saving on that,” she intimated.

‘Road to Jubilee House’ airs on Tuesdays and Thursdays on Radio Univers 105.7FM.

  • PPP Will Abolish BECE, Says Brigette Dzogbenuku- Asaase Radio

PPP Will Abolish BECE, Says Brigette Dzogbenuku- Asaase Radio

The 2020 presidential candidate of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), Brigitte Dzogbenuku, has promised to abolish the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) when voted to power.

According to her, the PPP government will ensure that students are educated from Creche to Senior High School(SHS) without a break for exams.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News, Madam Dzogbenuku said examination should not be the determining factor for the academic success of a student in Ghana.

“We will abolish BECE because every child must be educated at least to the SHS level…If everybody is educated to the SHS level and at least can read and write, Ghana will have a different kind of society where people are more informed and are more empowered. Examinations are not the only way to check people.”

“There can be regular assessment of the school and of the systems of how the teachers are performing and then the exam becomes the ultimate. We can’t use only exams to test kids because that is not the best test of a school or an education system.”

She stressed o the fact that her government would ensure that the  Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) is implemented to increase access.

“We will implement Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education to its fullest because the enforcers of that policy haven’t done their work well and that is why we see students loitering around without doing anything. We must also hold parents accountable so we can have the proper checks and balances in the schools to know which student is absent and why such a student is not in school.”

“First of all the government sectors must work. The education sector must also work and work efficiently to have an inspectorate board to make sure students who ought to be in school are in school and at the right time.”

Madama Brigitte Dzogbenuku was chosen as the flagbearer of the PP after their founder Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum declined to lead the party into this year’s election.

  • 40 ministers are enough to run this country – PPP

40 ministers are enough to run this country – PPP

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) has said one of the key anti-corruption steps its 2020 manifesto will tackle is the appointment of too many people into government.

PPP Communications Director, Paa Kow Ackon, said Ghana does not need more than 40 minsters in government.

“The…issue we have to deal with is to reduce the number of ministers. 123 ministers? What is the point? We think all the regions we have and our population, we should not have more than 40 ministers. 40 ministers is enough to run our country,” he said.

The PPP Communications Director was speaking at the launch of the Citizens’ Anti-Corruption Manifesto on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.

The citizens’ manifesto is a project that seeks to inform strategic policy direction for the political parties before they are elected into office.

The project is funded by STAR-Ghana Foundation with support from UKAid and European Union.

It is titled, “Making All Voices Count in the 2020 Anti-Corruption Agenda of Political Parties’ Manifestoes” and reveals, among other things that, citizens want legislative reforms to prioritise stronger sanctions against proceeds against criminal activity.

On the administrative fronts, citizens proposed that there should be an introduction of anti-corruption and integrity curricula in schools.

Paa Kow Ackon said the PPP will incorporate many of the recommendations in the citizens’ anti-corruption manifesto because, they are consistent with its understanding of good governance.

“It is important for us to also look at the appointment mechanism [of government officials]. You can’t appoint your family friends, colleagues into government. If they misapply funds, you can’t punish them or tell the Special Prosecutor to take them on…these are the critical issues that we must take them on,” he added.

The PPP, founded by Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, formerly a staunch member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), was tipped to be the third force after the NPP and the NDC during the 2012 elections but it failed to impress after the polls.
