9 Impressive Health Benefits of Cabbage

Despite its impressive nutrient content, cabbage is often overlooked.

While it may look a lot like lettuce, it actually belongs to the Brassica genus of vegetables, which includes broccoli, cauliflower and kale

It comes in a variety of shapes and colors, including red, purple, white and green, and its leaves can be either crinkled or smooth.

This vegetable has been grown around the world for thousands of years and can be found in a variety of dishes, including sauerkraut, kimchi and coleslaw.

Additionally, cabbage is loaded with vitamins and minerals.

This article uncovers 9 surprising health benefits of cabbage, all backed by science.

    1. Cabbage Is Packed With Nutrients
Even though cabbage is very low in calories, it has an impressive nutrient profile.

In fact, just 1 cup (89 grams) of raw green cabbage contains (2):

    Calories: 22
    Protein: 1 gram
    Fiber: 2 grams
Vitamin K: 85% of the RDI
Vitamin C: 54% of the RDI
    Folate: 10% of the RDI
    Manganese: 7% of the RDI
Vitamin B6: 6% of the RDI
    Calcium: 4% of the RDI
    Potassium: 4% of the RDI
    Magnesium: 3% of the RDI
Cabbage also contains small amounts of other micronutrients, including vitamin A, iron and riboflavin.

As you can see in the list above, it is rich in vitamin B6 and folate, both of which are essential for many important processes in the body, including energy metabolism and the normal functioning of the nervous system.

In addition, cabbage is high in fiber and contains powerful antioxidants, including polyphenols and sulfur compounds (2).

Antioxidants protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that have an odd number of electrons, making them unstable. When their levels become too high, they can damage your cells.

Cabbage is especially high in vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that may protect against heart disease, certain cancers and vision loss

    1. It May Help Keep Inflammation in Check
Inflammation isn’t always a bad thing.

In fact, your body relies on the inflammatory response to protect against infection or speed up healing. This kind of acute inflammation is a normal response to an injury or infection.

On the other hand, chronic inflammation that occurs over a long period of time is associated with many diseases, including heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage contain many different antioxidants that have been shown to reduce chronic inflammation (7).

In fact, research has shown that eating more cruciferous vegetables reduces certain blood markers of inflammation.

One study including over 1,000 Chinese women showed that those who ate the highest amounts of cruciferous vegetables had considerably lower levels of inflammation, compared to those who ate the lowest amounts (9).

Sulforaphane, kaempferol and other antioxidants found in this remarkable group of plants are likely responsible for their anti-inflammatory effect

    1. Cabbage Is Packed With Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that serves many important roles in the body.

For instance, it’s needed to make collagen, the most abundant protein in the body. Collagen gives structure and flexibility to the skin and is critical for the proper functioning of the bones, muscles and blood vessels (12).

Additionally, vitamin C helps the body absorb non-heme iron, the type of iron found in plant foods.

What’s more, it’s a powerful antioxidant. In fact, it has been extensively researched for its potential cancer-fighting qualities .

Vitamin C works to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals, which has been associated with many chronic diseases, including cancer.

Evidence suggests that a diet high in vitamin-C-rich foods is associated with a lower risk of certain cancers.

In fact, a recent analysis of 21 studies found that the risk of lung cancer decreased by 7% for each daily 100-mg increase in vitamin C intake.

However, this study was limited because it could not determine whether the decreased risk of lung cancer was caused by vitamin C or other compounds found in fruits and vegetables.

While many observational studies have found a link between higher vitamin C intake and a reduced risk of certain cancers, results from controlled studies remain inconsistent.

Even though more research is needed to determine this vitamin’s role in cancer prevention, it’s certain that vitamin C plays a key role in many important functions in the body.

While both green and red cabbage are excellent sources of this potent antioxidant, red cabbage contains about 30% more.

One cup (89 grams) of chopped red cabbage packs in 85% of the recommended intake for vitamin C, which is the same amount found in a small orange (21).

    1. It Helps Improve Digestion

If you want to improve your digestive health, fiber-rich cabbage is the way to go.

This crunchy vegetable is full of gut-friendly insoluble fiber, a type of carbohydrate that can’t be broken down in the intestines. Insoluble fiber helps keep the digestive system healthy by adding bulk to stools and promoting regular bowel movements (22Trusted Source).

What’s more, it’s rich in soluble fiber, which has been shown to increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This is because fiber is the main fuel source for friendly species like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli.

These bacteria perform important functions like protecting the immune system and producing critical nutrients like vitamins K2 and B12.

Eating more cabbage is an excellent way to keep your digestive system healthy and happy.

    1. May Help Keep Your HeartHealthy

Red cabbage contains powerful compounds called anthocyanins. They give this delicious vegetable its vibrant purple color.

Anthocyanins are plant pigments that belong to the flavonoid family.

Many studies have found a link between eating foods rich in this pigment and a reduced risk of heart disease.

In a study including 93,600 women, researchers found that those with a higher intake of anthocyanin-rich foods had a much lower risk of a heart attack.

    1. May Lower Blood Pressure

High blood pressure affects more than one billion people worldwide and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Doctors often advise patients with high blood pressure to reduce their salt intake. However, recent evidence suggests that increasing your dietary potassium is just as important for lowering blood pressure .

Potassium is an important mineral and electrolyte that the body needs to function properly. One of its main jobs is to help regulate blood pressure by counteracting the effects of sodium in the body .

Potassium helps excrete excess sodium through urine. It also relaxes blood vessel walls, which lowers blood pressure.

While both sodium and potassium are important for health, modern diets tend to be too high in sodium and too low in potassium .

Red cabbage is an excellent source of potassium, delivering 12% of the RDI in a 2-cup (178-gram) serving

Eating more potassium-rich cabbage is a delicious way to lower high blood pressure and may help keep it within a healthy range

    1. Could Help Lower Cholesterol Levels

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in every cell in your body.

Some people think all cholesterol is bad, but it’s essential for the body’s proper functioning.

Critical processes depend on cholesterol, such as proper digestion and the synthesis of hormones and vitamin D.

However, people who have high cholesterol also tend to have an increased risk of heart disease, especially when they have elevated levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol.

    1. Cabbage Is an Excellent Source of Vitamin K

Vitamin K is a collection of fat-soluble vitamins that plays many important roles in the body.

These vitamins are divided into two main groups (41).

Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone): Found primarily in plant sources.
Vitamin K2 (menaquinone): Found in animal sources and some fermented foods. It is also produced by bacteria in the large intestine.
Cabbage is a terrific source of vitamin K1, delivering 85% of the recommended daily amount in a single cup (89 grams) (2).

Vitamin K1 is a key nutrient that plays many important roles in the body.

One of its main functions is to act as a cofactor for enzymes that are responsible for clotting the blood (41).

Without vitamin K, the blood would lose its ability to clot properly, increasing the risk of excessive bleeding.

    1. It’s Very Easy to Add to Your Diet

In addition to being super healthy, cabbage is delicious.

It can be eaten raw or cooked and added to a wide variety of dishes like salads, soups, stews and slaws.

This versatile veggie can even be fermented and made into sauerkraut.

In addition to being adaptable to many recipes, cabbage is extremely affordable.

No matter how you prepare cabbage, adding this cruciferous vegetable to your plate is a tasty way to benefit your health.

  • Stonebwoy donates white canes to blind community in Kumasi

Stonebwoy donates white canes to blind community in Kumasi

Dancehall musician Stonebwoy has committed to raising funds to purchase white canes for the blind and partially sighted community in the Ashanti region.

The Putuu Hit maker made the spontaneous pledge when Ultimate fm’s Ivan Heathcote – Fumador approached him to give an endorsement with the white cane ahead of the International White Cane Safety Day.

Out of the over 5000 members of the Ghana Blinds Union in the Ashanti Region, the latest needs assessment saw over 4,700 expressing their dire need for white canes.

The tool which helps in the mobility of persons with disability is sold at the Ghana Blinds Union Resource Center at 70 cedis per copy, a price far outside the economic reach of several visually impaired persons in the region.

This has rendered several persons living with blindness, incapable of travelling around freely to realize their full potential.

Stonebwoy gave four hundred cedis on the spur of the moment and pledged to ensure that he takes up the challenge to purchase more of the canes for the Ghana Blinds Union to distribute to its members.

He cautioned drivers, street hawkers and the citizenry at large to respect, allow passage and offer help to all persons who they find walking with white canes.
“Let me use this opportunity to let all people know that once you are alive, you have not escaped disability
because we are prone to injuries and accidents. We have to give priority to persons with disability,” he averred

Advising drivers, He admonished “if you see these white canes with the red marks on it, you should know that these are people who are visually impaired and you have to accord them such respect to the maximum.”

Stonebuoy further pleaded with hawkers who have taken over the pedestrian walkways, as well as the general public to be considerate to the plight of the blind and partially sighted in Kumasi.

The Ghana Blinds Union in the Ashanti Region is taking advantage of the week’s world sight day and white cane safety day, to solicit funds from the public to purchase as many white canes as people are touched, to share among its members.

The donation from Stonebwoy and his commitment to this course gives this campaign a bigger push.

  • Do not use my bad deeds to tarnish the good name of Nana Aba Anamoah” – Osebo

Do not use my bad deeds to tarnish the good name of Nana Aba Anamoah” – Osebo

Ghanaian fashionista Osebo has expressed displeasure at the linking of everything he does to the personality of broadcaster Nana Aba Anamoah.

Osebo is the father of Nana Aba Anamoah’s only son. However, he believes the name of the popular on-air personality should not be dragged into whatever he gets himself involved in.

In an exclusive interview with Nana Ama McBrown on UTV’s United Showbiz, Osebo categorically stated that he does not like it when Nana Aba’s good reputation is dragged in the mud because of what he does in the present.

“When I do something good and they associate me with her, I don’t mind. But when I do something bad and people associate me to her because we have a child, for that I don’t like it,”

“She is my son’s mother, I will never have any issue with her,” he said in Twi.

The amorous relationship between Osebo and Nana Aba Anamoah which resulted in the birth of Paa Kow Anamoah, their only child, is currently nonexistent. However, anytime Osebo’s name is mentioned, Nana Aba Anamoah’s name also gets featured in the conversation which he believes is not right.

  • 11 Benefits of Eating Fish

    11 Benefits of Eating Fish

11 Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Eating Fish is among the healthiest foods on the planet.

It’s loaded with important nutrients, such as protein and vitamin D.

Fish is also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are incredibly important for your body and brain.

Here are 11 health benefits of eating fish that are supported by research.

    1. High in important nutrients

Fish is packed with many nutrients that most people are lacking.

This includes high-quality protein, iodine, and various vitamins and minerals.

Fatty species are sometimes considered the healthiest. That’s because fatty fish, including salmon, trout, sardines, tuna, and mackerel, are higher in fat-based nutrients.

This includes vitamin D, a fat-soluble nutrient that many people are lacking.

Fatty fish also boast omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for optimal body and brain function and strongly linked to a reduced risk of many diseases.

    1. May lower your risk of heart attacks and strokes

Heart attacks and strokes are the two most common causes of premature death in the world .

Fish is considered one of the most heart-healthy foods you can eat.

Unsurprisingly, many large observational studies show that people who eat fish regularly have a lower risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death from heart disease.

In one study in more than 40,000 men in the United States, those who regularly ate one or more servings of fish per week had a 15% lower risk of heart disease .

Researchers believe that fatty types of fish are even more beneficial for heart health due to their high omega-3 fatty acid content.

.3. Contain nutrients that are crucial during development

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for growth and development.

The omega-3 fat docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is especially important for brain and eye development .

For this reason, it’s often recommended that pregnant and breastfeeding women eat enough omega-3 fatty acids .

However, some fish are high in mercury, which is linked to brain developmental problems.

Thus, pregnant women should only eat low-mercury fish, such as salmon, sardines, and trout, and no more than 12 ounces (340 grams) per week. They should also avoid raw and uncooked fish because it may contain microorganisms that can harm the fetus.

    1. May boost brain health

Your brain function often declines with aging.

While mild mental decline is normal, serious neurodegenerative ailments like Alzheimer’s disease also exist.

Many observational studies show that people who eat more fish have slower rates of mental decline .

Studies also reveal that people who eat fish every week have more gray matter — your brain’s major functional tissue — in the parts of the brain that regulate emotion and memory

    1. May help prevent and treat depression

Depression is a common mental condition.

It’s characterized by low mood, sadness, decreased energy, and loss of interest in life and activities.

Although it isn’t discussed nearly as much as heart disease or obesity, depression is currently one of the world’s biggest health problems.

Studies have found that people who eat fish regularly are much less likely to become depressed (12Trusted Source).

Numerous controlled trials also reveal that omega-3 fatty acids may fight depression and significantly increase the effectiveness of antidepressant medications (13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source, 15Trusted Source).

Fish and omega-3 fatty acids may also aid other mental conditions, such as bipolar disorder .

    1. A good dietary sources of vitamin D

Vitamin D functions like a steroid hormone in your body — and a whopping 41.6% of the U.S. population is deficient or low in it .

Fish and fish products are among the best dietary sources of vitamin D. Fatty fish like salmon and herring contain the highest amounts .

A single 4-ounce (113-gram) serving of cooked salmon packs around 100% of the recommended intake of vitamin D.

Some fish oils, such as cod liver oil, are also very high in vitamin D, providing more than 200% of the Daily Value (DV) in a single tablespoon (15 ml).

If you don’t get much sun and don’t eat fatty fish regularly, you may want to consider taking a vitamin D supplement.

    1. May reduce your risk of autoimmune diseases

Autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes occur when your immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissues.

Several studies link omega-3 or fish oil intake to a reduced risk of type 1 diabetes in children, as well as a form of autoimmune diabetes in adults.

The omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D in fish and fish oils may be responsible.

Some experts believe that fish intake may also lower your risk of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, but the current evidence is weak at best.

    1. May help prevent asthma in children

Asthma is a common disease characterized by chronic inflammation of your airways.

Rates of this condition have increased dramatically over the past few decades .

Studies show that regular fish consumption is linked to a 24% lower risk of asthma in children, but no significant effect has been found in adults .

    1. May protect your vision in old age

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness that mostly affects older adults .

Some evidence suggests that fish and omega-3 fatty acids may protect against this disease.

In one study, regular fish intake was linked to a 42% lower risk of AMD in women .

Another study found that eating fatty fish once per week was linked to a 53% decreased risk of neovascular (“wet”) AMD .

    1. Fish may improve sleep quality

Sleep disorders have become incredibly common worldwide.

Increased exposure to blue light may play a role, but some researchers believe that vitamin D deficiency may also be involved .

In a 6-month study in 95 middle-aged men, a meal with salmon 3 times per week led to improvements in both sleep and daily functioning.

The researchers speculated that this was caused by the vitamin D content.

    1. Delicious and easy to prepar

Fish is delicious and easy to prepare.

For this reason, it should be relatively easy to incorporate it into your diet. Eating fish one or two times per week is considered sufficient to reap its benefits.

If possible, choose wild-caught fish rather than farmed. Wild fish tends to have more omega-3s and is less likely to be contaminated with harmful pollutants.

Salmon can be prepared baked, fried, seared, or boiled. It pairs well with a multitude of vegetables and grains.

  • 10 Health Benefits of Grapes That’ll Make You Want to Eat the Whole Bunch

10 Health Benefits of Grapes That’ll Make You Want to Eat the Whole Bunch

The greatness of grapes is real! Although every type of produce has a place in your diet, snacking on green, red, or purple varieties can help you get the recommended 1½ to 2 cups of fruit you need each day, as recommended by federal guidelines.

Right now, only 10% of Americans eat enough, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Whether you’re looking for a low-calorie snack for weight loss or a water-filled food that can help your skin, here are the top health benefits of eating — and drinking — grapes regularly.

    1. Grapes can help with weight loss or management.

Grapes are a low-calorie, fat-free food with a low glycemic index. These vine-growing goodies also contain compounds with antioxidant properties. One of them, resveratrol, is thought to trigger certain reactions that may improve energy metabolism.

    1. They’re a good source of vitamin K and vitamin C.
The vitamin K in grapes and other produce supports healthy bones and tissues, while the antioxidant vitamin C promotes healing and helps your body absorb iron. Here’s what else you’ll get in a one-cup serving of red or green grapes:
      Calories: 104
      Total Carbohydrate: 27 grams
      Dietary Fiber: 1 gram
      Protein: 1 gram
      Fat: 0 grams
      Vitamin C: 27% DV
      Vitamin K: 28% DV
      Thiamine: 7% DV
      Riboflavin: 6% DV
      Vitamin B6: 6% DV
      Potassium: 8% DV
      Copper: 10% DV
      Manganese: 5% DV
    2. Grapes are an anti-inflammatory food.

Like other plant-based foods, the antioxidants in grapes may reduce cellular damage by protecting cell membranes. Eating about 1 to 2 cups of grapes per day can help shield your tissues by limiting the chemical reactions that trigger inflammation in your body.

    1. They’re a heart-healthy snack.

When it comes to cardiovascular health, grapes are overachievers. Some compounds in grapes can help regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation from oxidative stress, improve blood flow, and protect your vascular system.

    1. Eating grapes can help your skin.

Specific phytonutrients found in colorful fruits and veggies like grapes may shield skin cells from the effects of ultraviolet light radiation, according to some small studies. Also try eating more watermelon, kiwi, berries, nuts, olives, and fish for a more radiant glow.

    1. Your brain may benefit from grapes.

Grape polyphenols may boost cognition and protect your noggin by maintaining vascular health and function. They may also play a role in signaling neurotransmitters and reducing your risk of harmful oxidation, both linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline as a part of a plant-based diet.

    1. They can lower your risk of diabetes.

Resveratrol, one of immune-boosting antioxidants found in grapes, is specifically linked to improving blood sugar regulation by affecting carbohydrate metabolism. That said, grape-flavored products can contain lots of added sugar, which has the reverse effect! Make sure you’re eating grapes in their least-processed form (fresh or freeze-dried grapes or wine!) to reap the benefits.

    1. They count toward hydration.

Little known fact: Grapes are 82% water. Proper hydration is directly linked to skin appearance, cell regeneration, and overall health. You get H2O from more than just beverages, though. High-water foods like — you guessed it — grapes can help your skin stay hydrated too.

    1. Eating more grapes can reduce risk of some cancers.

The benefits of veggies and fruit make them no-brainers when it comes to choosing meals and snacks. High-antioxidant foods like grapes are linked to a lower risk of some cancers by protecting cellular DNA, reducing oxidative stress, and limiting reactions that initiate tumor growth and development.

    1. Drinking grapes has benefits, too!

As if you needed another reason to pop a bottle: The phenolic compounds in grapes are still present after they’ve undergone the fermentation process, a.k.a. when they become vino. A whole host of research links regular wine consumption (in moderation, of course!) to a reduced risk of chronic disease and improved health overall. We’ll drink to that!

  • Monday briefing: Three tiers for Covid alerts

Monday briefing: Three tiers for Covid alerts

Downing Street says the country is at a “critical juncture” in managing Covid-19 as Boris Johnson prepares to lay out a new three-tier alert system for England.

After a Cobra meeting this morning which will determine the final plan, Johnson will address parliament and then appear on TV tonight alongside the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, and England’s chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty.

“This is a critical juncture and it is absolutely vital that everyone follows the clear guidance we have set out to help contain the virus,” a spokesman for No 10 said.

The plan is expected to include areas with relatively low infection levels being placed in what is being described as tier 1, where only national restrictions such as the rule of six, the 10pm curfew on restaurants and pubs, and existing rules on masks and social distancing will apply. The next tier is likely to include bans on home visits and indoor socialising with other households in bars or restaurants.

In areas under the toughest tier 3 restrictions – including Merseyside, Manchester and Newcastle – bars and pubs are expected to be forced to close. Late last night, the metro mayor of the Liverpool City Region and six other local leaders said in a statement their area was expected to face the toughest restrictions.

Restaurants in tier 3 councils were expected to be allowed to stay open until 10pm, but casinos, gyms and betting shops will have to close. However, government sources have reportedly disputed that restaurants would be allowed to remain open in Liverpool, and claimed that “nothing has been agreed” until this morning. You can read the details of the tiers here.

The plans will be debated on Tuesday, and could be implemented as soon as Wednesday, sources said. Business leaders are preparing to mount a legal challenge to the changes, which they say have “decimated the hospitality industry”. It comes as a survey by the Sustainable Restaurant Association showed 76% of respondents said they would revert to their previous habits of dining out up to four times a month, once restrictions allowed.
School meals – There’s been a surge in the number of children registering for school meals, with an estimated 1 million pupils recently signing up for the first time, food poverty campaigners say.

Analysis by the Food Foundation thinktank, released as part of footballer Marcus Rashford’s campaign to end child food poverty, estimates that as many as 900,000 more children have sought free school meals, on top of the 1.4 million who were already claiming, as the Covid-19 crisis plays havoc with family incomes.

Scotland – The son of a banker shot dead on the doorstep of their family home nearly 16 years ago has spoken out for the first time, saying he and his family deserve justice and closure from the unsolved murder. Andrew Wilson, 20, has no memories of his father, Alistair, apart from seeing him at the age of four lying dying on the doorstep of their home in Nairn in the Highlands.

“Someone came to our family home on a Sunday evening while my dad was reading my brother and me bedtime stories after our bath,” he said. “The next thing I know I am looking at my dad lying in our doorway covered in blood.” No one has been arrested in connection with the case, which remains under investigation.

Lord Janner – Three weeks of partially closed hearings into the way police, prosecutors, local government and the Labour party dealt with child sexual abuse allegations involving the late MP will start on Monday. In order to protect the identities of those who allege they were assaulted by the former Leicester West MP, most of the evidence sessions will not be live-streamed to the public. The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse is already carrying out all of its work remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic. Short summaries of the hearings will be published.

  • Ghanaians need to be patient with us because we are building a new team” – Jordan Ayew says ahead of Qatar clash.

Ghanaians need to be patient with us because we are building a new team” – Jordan Ayew says ahead of Qatar clash.

Crystal Palace forward, Jordan Ayew, is making a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to be patient with their expectations of the Black Stars since they are now putting the shape of the team together.

This call of his comes on the massive uproar by football-loving fans that greeted their abysmal performance against Mali on Friday where the Black Stars lost by three goals to nil (3-0).

Speaking ahead of their second international friendly clash with Qatar this afternoon in Turkey, Jordan Ayew said he believes they are poised to put up a spectacular performance, way better than what they did three days ago.

He added that he knows very well how Ghanaians expect them to be on top of their game but there are new faces in the Black Stars squad who will need adequate time to jell.

“It’s a game where we have to do better. We weren’t good enough in the first game, we all know, we are all professional players and we all know we didn’t` do well against Mali and we need to do better and at least start by having a good solid performance and after, the results will follow.

“But the most important thing is to have a very good performance as a team and obviously the result will follow. But also, let’s have in mind that we are building a new team and it’s going to take a bit of time so we need to be a bit patient.

“We need to make sure that we don’t repeat the mistakes that we did a couple of days ago we make sure we don’t repeat them tomorrow and make sure that we put in a solid performance to redeem ourselves.”

The Black Stars will be facing Qatar this afternoon in a FIFA international friendly match in Antalya Turkey at exactly 15:50 GMT.

“This Ministry is, therefore, working with the OSP to successfully complete this exercise. In the interim, the OSP has been notified by Ministry of finance that the IPO shall not be launched until the risk assessment has been completed,” it said.
