They are ready to play for Ghana Mohammed Polo urges new players to convince CK Akonnor

Ex-Ghana international, Mohammed Polo has indicated that the new players in the Black Stars team should convince head coach C.K Akonnor that they are ready to play for the national team when given the chance to feature in the Qatar friendly today.

Last Friday, the Black Stars were in action against the Eagles of Mali and embarrassingly lost 3-0 at the end of the 90 minutes.
On the Matchday, most of the new players invited for the friendly match had the opportunity to play.

After an unimpressive showing, Mohammed Polo believes they should convince Coach Akonnor that they are ready for the Black Stars when the team faces off with the Maroons of Qatar today.

“He should reassess the players he has. These are new players in the team. It is only 3 players who are known faces there. That is Partey, Jordan, and Dede. The rest of them should convince the coach that they are prepared to play”, Polo said in an interview with Class FM.

The former Hearts of Oak coach added, “That is why he called them. He has confidence in them. That is why he asked them to come. But if the performance will be the same thing like what happened in Mali then I think the old guys should come back”.

The Ghana friendly match against Qatar will kick-off at 15:30GMT later this afternoon and will be played at the Titanic sports stadium.

How to keep an office relationship from meddling with work

Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur, Mahalia Bamford, has revealed how she would handle an office relationship and keep it from distracting her from her work.

Interviewed by the Ekumfi Princess Mercy Bee on eTV Ghana’s Girl Vibes show, she was asked what she would do as an employer if she gets into an intimate relationship with one of her employees. She answered that to keep this situation from affecting work output negatively, she sees only two solutions out of it.

She noted that both of them would have to come to an agreement, specifically a formal one signed on paper which will draw a line between work relations and personal relations. If he cannot agree to these terms, then she would have to lay him off the job and help him find another job elsewhere.
Either ways, we need to have an agreement on paper to hold us so that he still can keep his job and I can have my business progress. Even if things don’t work out in the romantic relationship we’re trying to have and I can’t have a contractual agreement, he will have to quit the job”, she said.

According to Mahalia, if she, as a woman has been able to start her own business, has been able to employ him and is now willing to help him set up his own business, he should have the heart to be able to start something to save both their relationship and the business

  • For Better Business Together launches in Ghana

For Better Business Together launches in Ghana

ICC, UNDP and UN Global Compact join forces with DHL, Microsoft and PwC to help communities recover better from the pandemic.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) have established the COVID-19 Private Sector Global Facility, a global initiative and collaboration bringing together public and private sector partners to help local communities recover better from the pandemic. Deutsche Post DHL Group, Microsoft Corp. and the PwC network (“PwC”) have already joined the COVID-19 Private Sector Global Facility and the initiative is open for other like-minded private sector organisations that want to contribute.

The Global Facility is a response to corporate calls to action for private sector leaders and governments to work together to address the negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. The initiative has been established to better coordinate their responses, helping to ensure that immediate stimulus efforts flow into the real economy.

The Global Facility will operate at both the global and national levels. It aims to co-create solutions that are tailored to the phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in a given area and the specificities of the local private sector and government context. Guided by the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Facility will support a multisectoral, whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to face the multidimensional nature of the crisis. Recovery efforts will focus on how to rebuild more inclusive economies and societies, to set a new course for a socially just, low-carbon and climate-resilient world where no one is left behind. Initial projects will focus on the countries of Colombia, Ghana, the Philippines and Turkey. Both the geographical scope and participating partners will expand as the Global Facility develops.

The COVID-19 Private Sector Global Facility was announced by Mr Steiner at the SDG Business Forum during the UN General Assembly, the largest and most inclusive UN convening of private sector leaders. Launched under the motto “Recover Better Together”, the timing of this initiative has special importance, marking the commemoration of some important UN-related milestones: the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations; the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Global Compact; and the Centenary of ICC’s founding after WWI at a time when multilateralism is facing the greatest challenge of its generation.

The private sector has been acutely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 10 principles of the UN Global Compact affirm the belief that businesses exist to serve and advance their societies, and their success cannot come at the cost of social or environmental regression.

“It is a moment of human tragedy and intense economic and social upheaval. But it is also a moment of possibility. Through partnerships like the COVID-19 Private Sector Global Facility we will support companies to Recover Better Together from the pandemic and finally confront global inequality by taking action, as well as mitigate the worst impacts of a climate emergency that threatens all of humanity. Together we can construct a new paradigm of resilience,”.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced around 70% of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to shut down their operations. SMEs represent 50% of global GDP and more than 70% of global employment. The partners of the COVID-19 Private Sector Global Facility, representing multinational, global and local private sector stakeholders, commit to joint projects to develop policy and financial solutions for pandemic relief.

ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO said: “ICC’s local networks can bring value to the cooperation by reaching small business owners who want to have their challenges understood, their ideas heard, and their efforts to Recover Better recognised and built upon by others. SMEs need a way to facilitate this vital exchange of ideas, learning and experience with each other and with organisations and institutions in a position to support them.”

  • Why investment in mental health is needed now more than ever

Why investment in mental health is needed now more than ever

Protecting our mental health is always important. As anyone who has been diagnosed with a mental health condition will know, investing in our mental health is essential to returning to our full potential. COVID-19 has put unprecedented strain on our mental health, whilst simultaneously disrupting treatment and services around the world. Evidence suggests it has increased stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression, substance use, self-harm and suicidal behaviour – yet access to support, especially trained support, has never been more difficult.

At the beginning of this year, the message on mental health was loud and clear at Davos 2020: it is time to invest in mental health. This was before our world changed forever in the weeks to follow.

Our world wasn’t set up to respond to mental health needs before COVID-19 – and it certainly isn’t now. It is estimated 284 million and 265 million people are suffering from anxiety and depression respectively. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds globally. Yet only around 2% of health budgets are spent on mental health. These alarming statistics show there is a crisis of inaction on mental health all over the world.
Investing in mental health is not just the right thing to do. As experts have proven time and time again, it’s also good for business. Businesses have the power to create real change, through tackling workplace mental health and engaging in the global conversation around mental health in the workplace and beyond.

COVID-19 is taking its toll on already overburdened and underfunded mental health services in many countries around the world. We need movement on mental health and we need to see mental health as foundational to our recovery from COVID-19. We cannot move forward and rebuild without it.

The latest figures from WHO show more than 90% of member states have seen disruptions in mental health services. And while a majority of member states have included mental health and psychosocial services (MHPSS) as part of their national COVID-19 response plans, only 17% have ensured full funding to cover these additional MHPSS activities.
Back in April, more than 1,000 mental health experts and advocates from more than 40 countries signed an open letter calling on global leaders to integrate mental health into recovery plans. This letter backed the recommendations of the report of the UN Secretary General on COVID-19 and mental health, which were that integrating mental health within COVID-19 response and recovery plans was essential. Over 95 member states supported this same report’s recommendations in a statement to the UN. This World Mental Health Day, campaigners, experts, governments and lived experience advocates are uniting once more to demand movement on mental health.

The question as we go into this year’s World Mental Health Day, given our continuing efforts to tackle COVID-19 and think about the world we want to rebuild post COVID-19, is this: Will our world finally move beyond talking about mental health, and invest in mental health as foundational to our collective COVID-19 response and recovery?

One thing is for sure – the future of mental health is up to us. There could be at least 60 million fewer cases of anxiety, depression and epilepsy between now and 2030 if we increase spending on mental health to recommended levels. People could gain 25 million healthy life years, and 200,000 deaths could be avoided. Countless benefits to individuals, families, communities, businesses and our world could be gained if we invest in everyone, everywhere, to give people the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We can do this by investing in our own mental health, supporting the mental health of those around us and by demanding that our leaders invest in mental health across the world. COVID-19 gives us a once in a lifetime opportunity to move mental health forward. By investing now and building mental health into all COVID-19 response and recovery plans, we can build back better.

Please join us and the growing movement as part of this year’s official World Mental Health Day campaign: #MoveForMentalHealth. Share the message among your networks that the time to move is now. Act yourself – commit to make a new investment in mental health. Campaigners around the world will be moving; playing sport, going for a walk, joining in the growing TikTok dance challenge, or marching for change as part of the Global March for Mental Health on October 9.

The future is up to us. Will you join us? It’s time we all moved forward and invested in mental health. Now, more than ever, it’s #TimeToInvest and move for mental health.

  • Dumelo, Lydia Alhassan doing aqua olympics in Ayawaso West after rains – Social media users

Dumelo, Lydia Alhassan doing aqua olympics in Ayawaso West after rains – Social media users

Some social media users, despite the devastating effects of Saturday’s downpour on some parts of West Lands in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, have began striking a contest between two parliamentary candidates in the area.
The two, John Dumelo contesting on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Lydia Seyram Alhassan for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been pushed to top trends Sunday, October 11, 2020 following their attempts to support their constituents.

It must be noted however, that the two have over the past months engaged in fierce political competition since the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus.

Away from coronavirus this time, the heavy downpour in some parts of Accra on Saturday presented another situation for the two to show how much they care for their people.

According to several persons who have their eyes on the constituency, John Dumelo who took the first step by jumping into the flood waters to sympathise with residents prompted a swift reaction from the sitting Member of Parliament, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

Clad in a traditional ‘kaba and slit’ with a farmer boot, Lydia Seyram Alhassan also responded to the challenge to support her constituents.

But social media users have described the seeming political challenge as an “aqua Olympics” game between the two candidates.

Others have also humorously tagged it as a “boot for boot’ challenge because the two wore similar boots during their visit.

It would be recalled that in April this year, the two candidates were actively engaged in food distribution in their constituency.

A situation which they claimed was to help the vulnerable survive the effects of the novel coronavirus and the lockdown.

Chieftancy Disputes at the Western Region

Two persons have sustained life-threatening injuries from of a chieftaincy clash that erupted on Saturday 10th October at Dompim-Pepesa, a farming community in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.
The Tarkwa Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent George Andrew Kumah confirming the incident to Citi News said the victims sustained severe cutlass wounds after a funeral ceremony.

“There was a funeral yesterday [Saturday] at Dompim, involving a late linguist from Wassa Fiase Traditional Council. Police provided security for the burial which was attended by the chief from Wassa Fiase, together with the Chief of Dompim, Nana Duah Panin II. It was in the evening around 5:30 pm when some boys clashed in the town. One was allegedly holding a cutlass chasing the other, but the one being chased collected the cutlass and rather slashed the bearer.”

Chief Superintendent Kumah further explained that the incident was on the back of an ensuing chieftaincy dispute in the area.

“Nana Nyowa Panin IV is now the current Chief of Dompim and Nana Ohyiawora Bian is a destooled Chief of Dompim but some people still parade him as the chief of the town. The victim was at the Information Centre telling the people of Dompim that they should not recognize Nana Nyowa Panin IV as the Chief of Dompim but rather Ohyiawora Bian, the destooled Chief. The offended supporters rushed to the Information Centre and there was a confrontation, but they were separated and everybody left.”

“The victim, Dauda Issaka, who is a supporter of the destooled chief armed himself with a cutlass and went in town and spotted the very guy who confronted him at the Information Centre, Robert Amo, alias Jato. In the middle of the confrontation, Jato rather overpowered Dauda Issaka who came with the cutlass, collected the cutlass from him and rather slashed him. Although he sustained multiple cutlass wound on the head, Dauda did not die but currently receiving treatment at the Tarkwa Apinto Hospital after he was transferred from the Simpa Clinic.”

Chief Superintendent George Andrew Kumah said besides Dauda, another lady also sustained serious injuries but information on how her injuries came about is yet to be ascertained.

“We have recorded two persons who have sustained injuries because there is a lady who has also sustained injuries, but she has not given us the details about what actually happened. When she rushed to the police station, she was immediately given medical form to the hospital and report back but she is yet to return. But so far we have arrested one person, Robert Amo, alias Jato who slashed Dauda Issaka,” he said.

If Afia Schwar doesn’t honour the invitation of the traditional court in James Town, the police will come in and arrest her to disrespecting the chiefs and the court according to Mzbel.
