Ghanaian Times: Policy on reopening of basic schools amid Coronavirus

We reported in yesterday’s issue of the Ghanaian Times an appeal to the government to reconsider the decision not to open all streams of schools in the country.

The appeal, which was made by the Executive Director of Child Rights International (CRI), Mr Bright Appiah, said allowing second-year students in both junior and senior high schools to resume classes, while the rest stayed at home had worse repercussions for children.

In a statement issued in Accra in apparent response to the government’s decision not to reopen basic schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Appiah said the social structure that existed among families, the society and the entire nation had not changed to accommodate and provide the needed tuition for children at home.

Additionally, he explained that the corporate environment of the country had not adjusted its time lines to allow families to spend more time with their children at home.

The statement further argued that the media, especially television and social media did not have adequate educational programmes to aid children’s academic growth at home.

“The government, since March 16, closed all schools due to  spread COVID-19 in the country but had since reopened tertiary institutions, senior and junior high schools,” it said.

However, the government has stated categorically that those basic schools would remain closed until further notice.

The decision of the government, we believe, is purely based on science and data and so just as it has been able to do for other segments of the educational ladder, the government would reopen the schools when the time is due.

Do not forget, in July, pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana held a press conference in Accra and called on the government to shut down schools due to COVID-19 spread in the schools a few weeks after reopening.

According to the teacher unions then, measures instituted by the authorities to ensure safety of both staff and students had not been implemented to prevent the spread of the disease.

The Ghanaian Times believes that information provided by the teacher unions is very useful and if any consideration is to be made for the reopening of the schools, these are some of the pieces of information which should be taken into account.

We think the government must consider the suggestion from CRI whilst it considers all the necessary protocols before reopening the schools.

We agree with CRI that keeping the schools closed may affect the children’s education in many ways but as we know it now, we are not in normal times and COVID-19 appears to have come to stay and may be with us for a long time.

It is, therefore, in our interest and that of our children to tread cautiously while instituting measures that would prevent the spread of COVID-19  when the schools reopen.

Do not forget the children must be alive to attend school.

  • “I remember I was so broke that I had to order an appetizer as a meal” – Tiwaa Savage shares hustle story

“I remember I was so broke that I had to order an appetizer as a meal” – Tiwaa Savage shares hustle story

The journey to success is never straight, broad and full of roses. It is completely the opposite; a narrow, crooked road full of thorns and setbacks. This is the success story of famous Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage.

From a distance, Tiwa Savage is seen as a very well-to-do woman who has worked very hard to attain a certain status in society with a sizeable amount of luxury and wealth.

However, her rise to prominence was a tough one. Narrating her hustle story at a surprise party organised by her friends and family for her “Celia” album launch, the award-winning singer had a lot to share.

“I think I was 22 and we were in New York. I was living in Bed-Stuy, kind of like a shelter. A lot of people didn’t know this.

“I was in a shelter for women that had drug abuse problems.

“I just graduated from school. You know as an international student you can’t work. So, I couldn’t work. I was doing the side thing in Bed-Stuy which is like the hood in Brooklyn.”

“Elohor came to NewYork, Elohor has always been that girl… she’s like let’s go to … she was like let’s just hook up, let’s go and eat.

“We went to Timesquare, I ordered appetizer because I was so broke and I was so hungry! And I remember she was just looking at me asking what are you ordering and I was like I’m not really hungry… and then she just kept asking me are you sure… and I just started crying and when asked what is the matter I was like Elohor i don’t have money…

“She started ordering stuff and even ordered stuff for me to take home. .. and I just remembered going home to my box (in the shelter) and I just started crying and I was like I can’t believe this girl just made my day…”

“So the first time when they posted my picture on Timesquare, she was the first person I called to say Elohor do you remember the first time… that was twenty years later… If I gave up five years ago I wouldn’t be saying this story. Don’t let time rob you of your joy…”

If you are to base your judgment of Tiwa Savage on his current status, you wouldn’t know what she had to go through to be where she is now. A little bit of hard work and a determination to keep going will surely amount to success.

  • Benedicta Gaffah hip pad goes wrong Again

Benedicta Gaffah hip pad goes wrong Again

Hip pads in itself is not a bad thing. Hip and buttock padding is used to increase the size of the hips and buttocks in order to increase waist-hip ratio which implies more feminine body shape. It is used by women wishing to increase their physical attractiveness.

This technique is often used by slay queens to create the illusion of a curvy shape.

But this is often taken to the extreme and in such situations, it caused an embarrassment to the person.

In this day of social media, the least mistake a persons, especially celebrities, do in the quest to look good before the public may end up causing irreparable damage to one’s reputation.

One of such bad moment just visited actress Benedicta Gafah. The screen goddess post a picture of herself in a jumpsuit outside on Facebook.

At a glance, the glowing skin of Benedicta appeared clean and well tucked in the American flag coloured jumpsuit.

However, social media is too public and such a wild street. The streets of social media go beyond a glance.

Soon after the picture was posted, the eagle eyes of followers came to duty. Even before zooming the picture, the apparent dislocated hip pad of Benedicta could be seen miles away. The nature of her pose did all the damage.

The actress had obviously presented to the public, a wardrobe malfunction picture.

The comment section obviously and predictably did not go soft on her. Followers took a screenshot and attached to comment and came hard at the beautiful actress. So why can’t she do without padding of hips?

  • Victory is Sealed for the NDC- Jane Naana Agyemang

Victory is Sealed for the NDC- Jane Naana Agyemang

Running mate of Mr. John Dramni Mahama, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang made a historic visit to the Western North Region of Ghana.

The newly created region were indeed privileged to welcome a distinguished personality like Mrs. Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang. The visit which was aimed at sensitizing the people of western North to rally behind the National Democratic Congress, NDC, proved to be a succesful one, as she was accompanied by a huge mob of people, who cried their hearts out for Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang to deliver them from the life of slavitude, that Nana Addo is paying them back with.

As eloquent as ever, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang tactfully distanced herself from the constant Name calling. Which has been a typical feature of the ruling New Patriotic Party’s campaign.

She pointed out the flawed policies, that has ridiculed the faith that the good people of Ghana bestowed on Nana Addo. Adding that he has paid them back with debt and poverty. It is worth noting that former president John Dramani Mahama has been a vehement critique of this Nana Addo Government. Pointing out clear misuse of taxpayers money and loan debt of over 120bn cedis. Which is being enjoyed only by this family and friends goverment. Other politicians have pointed out the ludacris nature of recruitement especially in the security agencies. An issue that has totally ridiculed the constitution’s mandate that the recruitment of person’s for such should be open and fair and further more based on merit. A lot of Ghanaians have raised eye brows as to how there will be no forms, yet people will be called for training. A classic feature that has persisted during this 3 years, President Akuffo Addo has been in power.

After her speech, Mrs. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang made a symbol that will be perhaps missed by onlookers. Yet the camera was sharp in capturing it. Mrs. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang held her hands together.

She was captured with praying hands. Praying hands are a Christian symbol often selected for tattoos as a remembrance to the power of Christ and prayer. The art itself has a deeper meaning. It represents dedication to self and family, courage and sacrifice and respect.

From this alone, Professor Naana Agyeman is displaying the National Democratic Congress acknowledgement of the role of Christ and prayer in the development of Ghana. She is further displaying the power of unity as one family and it is a powerful message to be sent to Ghanaians in this trying times.

She ended her message by asking the question, Name what is bothering you and our goverment will listen and solve it for you. A really powerful conclusion.

See what Nurses were doing to NDC T- shirt – Sad

A photo fast going viral shows a group of nurses stepping on an NDC shirt, having the photo of the former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama.

For sometime now, Ghanaian nurses haven’t taken it easy on the former president, ever since he lost previous years elections. During his tenure (President Mahama’s) tenure of office as president, he canceled the nursing trainee allowance, which were being received by these nurses to supplement their incomes in their stay in school. Upon various demonstration et al, the John Dramani Mahama led government still remained adamant in giving them the needed attention.

As a payback, the nurses mobilized themselves to campaign strongly against his government, as they vigorously campaigned on the ticket of the ruling NPP. The current president, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo promised to reinstate the Nursing Trainee allowance should he be voted for, and indeed he honored his promise. John Mahama in his earlier campaign tours has promised to revise all his mistakes, and continue to take off and continue the good works of Nana Addo.

From the looks of things, these nurses are in no way going to listen to Mahama, as they have paid a keen intererest in the governance of the ruling government.
