First lady hands over library project to Moree community

The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo Addo has commissioned a 40-seater computerised library stocked with books on different subjects for children at Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) district of the Central Region.

The library is a project under the “Learning to read and reading to learn initiative” launched by the Rebecca Foundation to improve literacy among children from the ages of six and 15.

Speaking at the commissioning, the first lady explained that the library was built to ensure that children in Moree had access to information and ultimately secure a deserved great future.

She encouraged the children to cultivate the culture of reading saying, “read, learn new words and learn new things. Start writing your own little stories, it can be about your everyday life, adventure or some issue that you feel passionate about”

She stressed that writing would give them a voice to communicate with the World and share their talent.

Three similar libraries have been built in the Upper west, Bono and the Western North Regions, while Oti and Ashanti regions are also to benefit soon.

The First Lady said one’s ability to write, read and communicate effectively was vital for social and economic development and to transform lives.

However, she regretted that studies showed that many children at the lower primary level in Sub-Saharan Africa struggled to read in the official or local languages.

“Anyone with limited literacy skills is virtually excluded from written information that can change their lives. Literacy is not just about reading and writing, it is the ability to read, understand and apply the content to improve one’s life and that of society”, she added.

According to the first lady, the free Senior High School (SHS) policy had been one of the most significant developments in the history of the country that would have major positive impact on the society.

“If we enhance a child’s ability to read and write, the learning outcomes and success at academic achievement greatly improve. We have no option as a country that to re-ignite the reading culture”.

“All projects of Rebecca Foundation are designed to be mainstreamed to ensure ownership by beneficiaries”, she added.

She expressed gratitude to the Ghana Library Authority (GLA) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) for their immense support for the “ reading to learn and learning to read project”.

Mr Hayford Siaw, the Director General of the GLA said a total of 80 libraries were built since 2017, while several others were renovated to meet modern standards.

Four of them he said, were built by the Rebecca Foundation and expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her commitment to improving literacy among Ghanaian children.

‘I’ll prosecute my own appointees if they engage in corruption’ – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has said should he win the upcoming 7 December 2020 general election, he will not shield any corrupt appointees but will ensure that they are prosecuted rather than wait for a different administration to take up such matters.

Addressing supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Dzodze, as part of his four-day tour of the Volta Region, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assured Ghanaians that his next government, will not relent in its fight against, adding that he will also investigate all outstanding corruption cases.

“When NDC comes to power, we will investigate all outstanding corruption cases and we are not going to prosecute only our opponent, we will caution our ministers and everybody because if you indulge in corruption, we won’t wait for another government to prosecute, we will prosecute you ourselves”, he noted.

Mr Mahama also said Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu’s hands have been tied by the Akufo-Addo government and, so, he cannot go after any government official or member of the governing New Patriotic Party for alleged corruption.

Mr Mahama said the situation has emasculated Mr Amidu and rendered his office ineffective.

“There are cases at the office of the Special Prosecutor but they have tied his hand”, Mr Mahama said, adding: “He can’t investigate them, they have stopped him”.

“As long as he [offender] is an NPP person, he [Martin Amidu] can’t do anything”, the flag bearer of the biggest opposition party said.

Also, Mr Mahama questioned the motive behind the Akufo-Addo government’s decision to pass the controversial agreement between Agyapa Mineral Royalty Limited and the government of Ghana, despite the Minority in Parliament raising serious questions over the deal.

He saluted the Minority in Parliament for drawing attention to the elevated risk in placing an ostensible second Sovereign Wealth Fund in a haven.

Mr Mahama pointed out that the deal is shrouded in secrecy, as the individuals and shareholders behind the company are still unknown to Ghanaians.

“Up till now, they have not disclosed the shareholders of the company; who are behind the company and any time there is corruption, the President clears them”, he added.

Mr Mahama also questioned the prudence of the government’s decision to mortgage Ghana’s mineral royalties for such a long period when it has only four months left to be in office, despite the genuine concerns raised by the Minority.

“And for a responsible government, why should you go and invest in an offshore tax haven where we know that is where fraudulent transaction takes place?” he asked.

  • NDC failed to give value for money on projects – Danquah Institute boss.

NDC failed to give value for money on projects – Danquah Institute boss.

Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Richard Ahiagba has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of not providing value for money on some of the infrastructural projects including interchanges that were undertaken during their term in office.
Mr Ahiagba said on TV3’s New Day Wednesday, August 19 that an interchange was constructed to the tune of $260 million, an amount he said was way above the right amount.

This, he said, smacks of “tragedy”, and “crime of historic proportion”.

Mr Ahiabga was contributing to a discussion on the virtual Town Hall meeting that was addressed by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday, August 18 at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra.

Mr Ahiagba said: “Ask the NDC, how in the name of God are you able to build one interchange at $260 million. What was going on? What went into that negotiation?

“This is tragedy, this is a crime of historic proportion if we are not able to explain this.”

For his part, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North Constituency, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, said the records of former President John Mahama in the area of infrastructure scares the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said the NPP are aware of the disappointment of Ghanaians in the current government following, in his view, the low levels of infrastructural development they have seen over the past three-and-a-half years.

Therefore, he said, the government is making every attempt to discredit Mr Mahama and his party, the NDC, ahead of this year’s polls.

“Former President John Mahama is going into this year’s elections as someone who has done it before.

“The 2020 elections to every Ghanaian is going to be between someone who did it before and the one who has done nothing.

“The NPP are aware because when they go on the ground they hear the people talk about and testify about the projects that were ongoing in their communities or the projects that were completed in their communities.

“And sometimes the pain with which the people speak about this government, I am sure, frightens the average researcher in the NPP.”

During the event, Dr Bawumia said, among other things, that the current government has undertaken more infrastructural projects than the previous administration.

He said since 2017, the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has initiated 17,334 infrastructural projects in this country,

“Of these, we have completed 8,746 and there is 8,588 ongoing,” Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said.

He further revealed that the Akufo-Addo administration is adopting a two-way approach towards infrastructural development in the country.

This approach makes it possible to cover all persons in the country under the project.

“Our focus has been to provide infrastructure for all. That has been the focus. And our approach to infrastructural development in Ghana has been two-fold.”

And, that has been a contributory factor inhibiting rapid transformation as a country.

On this occasion, I am advising all delegates to put candidates having high human values and positive thoughts on good tables instead and vote for them. Boldly, ignore those with investment funds as tokens. That may help us help elect patriotic leaders to manage our rich country and leave indelible legacies behind for the next generation.
