  • PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO CALLS OFF REFERENDUM

    PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO CALLS OFF REFERENDUM

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has called off the holding of the Referendum of 17th December 2019, citing the lack of a broad, national consensus amongst key stakeholders and the populace.

President Akufo-Addo has, thus, instructed the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama, MP, who is spearheading the process, on behalf of the government, to abort the process, and see to the withdrawal of the bills for the amendment of the Constitution, both in respect of article 243(1) and Article 55(3).

Addressing the nation on Sunday, 1st December 2019, the President indicated the attainment of a broad consensus, for him, on a matter as important as the amendment of an entrenched provision of the Constitution, is critical.

“I do not believe that such an amendment should be driven as a party matter. There has to be a clear national consensus and agreement amongst the populace that a particular entrenched provision no longer serves the interest of the people, and, thus, has to be removed,” he said.

He continued, “In this case, it had been long apparent that political parties were, in fact, actively involved in district assembly elections, despite their apparently non-partisan nature. The time had come to strip the process of its hypocrisy, and accept and work with the reality of party involvement.”

Explaining the rationale for his decision, the President stated that that he came into office, nearly three years ago, with the firm conviction, emanating from the campaign and national discussions, that there was a national consensus for two important amendments to the country’s governance system, which would enhance its effectiveness and accountability – the reorganization of the country’s regional governance structure, and the potential involvement of political parties in local governance.

It was in furtherance of this and other matters that, on Tuesday, 18th April, 2017, a little over four (4) months into my mandate, he held a meeting with his three predecessors, their Excellencies Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, and John Dramani Mahama, at Jubilee House, to seek their views and counsel on these issues.

“I came away from that meeting with the view that there was a consensus amongst us that the time had come for political parties to participate openly in district assembly elections and local governance,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo noted that, indeed, amongst the leadership of Parliament and amongst Members of Parliament on both sides, and amongst, virtually, all stakeholders who had been consulted either by him, or by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, the clear indications were that there was a broad national consensus for the repeal of article 55(3).

Debunking the notion that elections in Ghana’s 4th Republic have been divisive, the President stated that elections have rather been a unifying factor in the politics of the 4th Republic, the reason why “we have experienced the longest, uninterrupted period of stable, constitutional governance in our history, banishing the specter of instability that disfigured the early years of our nation’s existence, and the benefits are still showing. It would also mean that freedom of association, which is one of the most fundamental freedoms in any democracy, would be given full expression in Ghanaian democracy.”

Regrettably, President Akufo-Addo stated that the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, made a U-turn, and stated that it was no longer prepared to go along with the national consensus.

“They indicated further that they will actively campaign for a ‘No’ vote. In as much as I still believe that there is enough support in the country for a ‘Yes’ vote to be successful on 17th December, I do not believe that this is the proper atmosphere in which an issue of such nature, i.e. the repeal of an entrenched provision of the Constitution, should be addressed in our country,” he said.

Even after their U-turn, the President revealed that he undertook consultations across a broad range of opinion as to the way forward, with the general result being that the process of repeal should be put on hold, for the time being, to enable a durable, national consensus to be forged on this matter.

“In these circumstances, I am convinced that it will not serve the public interest to go ahead with the holding of the Referendum on 17th December, even though I believe a strong campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote would have succeeded. This is not the kind of atmosphere in which the repeal of an entrenched provision of the Constitution should take place,” he added.

Despite having an unrepentant belief in party politics being good for the country, President Akufo-Addo stated that “I also think that, on matters of such constitutional significance, there should be a broad, national consensus behind the repeal of an entrenched provision of the Constitution”.

The President assured that his Government will continue to work for a broad, national consensus on the issue, adding that “should such a consensus be attained for the repeal of article 55(3) of the Constitution, and an agreement reached for political parties to participate in and sponsor candidates for election to district assemblies, at any point during my tenure of office as President of the Republic, the matter will be brought again back to the front burner of our public discourse for the necessary action”.

BAWUMIA CUTS SOD FOR EASTERN CORRIDOR ROADS CONSTRUCTION

Construction works on the 88-kilometer Hohoe-Jasikan to Dodo Pepesu stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road has commenced. The Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu Project forms part of Phase 1 of the $2billion Government of Ghana/ Sinohydro Master Project Agreement.

Accompanied by the Minister for Roads and Highways. Hon Kwesi Amoako Atta and the traditional rulers of Oti Region the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday, 19th November, cut sod at Jasikan for works to begin on the stretch of road which has a long and painful history of neglect under the erstwhile government.

The Vice President noted that of all the critical roads listed in the 2020 budget, Hohoe-Jasikan and Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu are the only roads to commence. Indeed, contractors for these projects mobilized to site two weeks before Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta presented the 2020 Budget statement in Parliament. Dr. Bawumia also noted that at the time these projects were initiated, both roads were part of the Volta region.

The Eastern Corridor Roads project, allotted as N2 of the National Road Network, begins from the Tema Motorway through to the Volta, Oti, Northern, North East, and Upper East regions to neighboring Burkina Faso.

Dr Bawumia assured residents of Oti Region that the government would ensure the project is completed on schedule, and they would receive their fair share of development projects as all regions shall be receiving.

Vice President Bawumia reiterated the government’s plan for fixing critical roads in the country. According to him, sods will be cut for the Cape Coast inner city roads and Nyinahini area roads this week under the Infrastructure for Bauxite facility. The rest of the other approved lots are expected to be undertaken soon.

Vice President Bawumia announced many other projects to be undertaken by Government in the Oti region.

On behalf of the Oti region, Nana Aburam Akpandza V, Paramount Chief of Buem and Chairman of Buem Traditional Council, who chaired the sod-cutting ceremony, expressed satisfaction at the show of concern by the government towards the development of their roads.

Present at the sod-cutting ceremony were Hon. Kwesi Owusu Yeboah (Oti Regional Minister), Mr. Zhang Nianmu (President of Powerchina West Africa and Central Africa of which Sinohydro is a subsidiary), representatives of Embassy of China, Hon. Michael Yao Jato (MP for Krachi East and Deputy Minister for Sanitation), and dozens of chiefs from the Oti region.

  • NDC CAN NEVER WIN ELECTIONS IN GHANA IF WE VOTE YES ~ ASIEDU NKETIA

NDC CAN NEVER WIN ELECTIONS IN GHANA IF WE VOTE YES ~ ASIEDU NKETIA

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia made some interesting points in relation to their decision to abandon the YES ship to pitch camp with the NO boat in an interview monitored by dikoder. Com

He also offers us a glimpse into the reasons behind their sudden U-turn with respect to the decision to have MMDCEs elected on party lines.

To him, political parties struggle to raise funds to sponsor Parliamentary candidates in elections, so adding the local level elections to this would make it highly impossible for opposition parties to win elections.

This, he intimated, would give the party in power an undue advantage and make Ghana a one-party state, making it difficult for a party like the NDC to come back to power.

His point is that a party in power can easily mobilize funds to prosecute elections unlike those in opposition.

A cursory analysis of this admission by Asiedu Nketia manifestly suggests that the NDC has chickened out of the YES train because they feel allowing MMDCEs to be voted on party lines would be detrimental to the survival of the NDC.

What still remains a mystery is why the NDC supported the YES vote all this while when armed with this information.

When did it dawn on them that they could be kept on the sidelines of opposition if they supported the YES campaign?

NPPS ARE MORE VIOLENT THAN NDCS — A PLUS AFFIRMS

Controversial musician, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, says compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) are more violent in attacking people on social media.

His comment comes after some NPP members verbally attacked Ghanaian media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah for criticising President Akufo-Addo to stop blaming the former President, John Dramani Mahama at the least opportunity.

The statement did not go down well with the majority of Akufo-Addo sympathizers and NPP members who took turns to insult and abuse her personality on all social media platforms.

Sharing his opinion however on the matter, A Plus said he cannot fathom why his colleagues (guys) in the NPP are always the ones that get furious even when the issue has got to do with both NPP and NDC.

“So please ooo why is it that when people attack both NDC and NPP it is the NPP guys that get angry and insult? I just don’t get it”,.

  • NEPOTISM AND FAVOURITISM IN GOVERNANCE HAS INCREASE CORRUPTION IN GHANA – HON. AHENKWAA YAW FREDERICK

The communications headquarters of the National Democratic Congress recently announced the highest level of Nepotism (family and friends) governance in the NPP government. Names of fifty-one ruling members of the New Patriotic Party were mentioned allegedly as the relatives and friends of the president of Ghana H.E Nana Akuffo Addo.

This revelation has been the matter for discussion in the country.

Reacting to the revelation, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress of Jaman North constituency Hon Ahenkwaa Yaw Frederick stated that, this family and friends’ government is the result of the greatest level of corruption in the country.

He said this on *Thursday, November 7, 2019.  ”If relatives and friends are assigned a position in governance, how do you arrest and prosecute them if they go beyond the rules of the governance. You can’t because blood is thicker than water, so it will be very difficult to set legal suits against them. He lamented.

Finally Hon. Ahenkwaa asserted that, due to the family and friends governance by the NPP government, Ghana is now bleeding of corruption and so, Ghanaians must vote for NDC because NPP is here to create, loot, share, suspended,  re-award then ask to go free.

GO TO COURT – NPP DARES NDC

The New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti region has challenged the opposition National Democratic Congress to seek for legal suit against the NPP party and President Nana Addo’s government over what they describes as family and friends government.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) presented 50 names of persons which they claimed friends and relatives within the Akufo-Addo government.

But commenting on the outcome of the NDC press conference, the Ashanti regional NPP communication director, Mr Kwasi  stated that, NDC should preferably takes legal action against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) on what they describe as family and friends instead of seeking cheap publicity to attract the attention of Ghanaians.

He mentioned that, the issues raised at the NDC press conference was bogus, ‘useless’ and waste of time. Adding that, they could have used the huge platform to render the ideas and ideologies of the party, particularly on their campaign manifesto to Ghanaians.

According to the regional communications director, the President Akufo-Addo’s government have not breach any law since his appointments are based on merit and capabilities despite being cronies or relative.

Thus, he provoked the NDC national communication director, Mr Sammy Gyemfi and his party to drag the NPP to the Apex Court, CHRAJ and all the anti-corruption bodies to carry the matter on.

He urged Ghanaians to support the current administration with prayers to fulfil all the promises made during the 2016 general elections campaign.
