SONA21: Agyapa Deal is Coming back to Parliament

President Akufo-Addo has announced in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) that government will table the controversial Agyapa deal before Parliament again.

He said the government will come back to engage Parliament on the steps it intends to take on the future of the Agyapa transaction.

The President in his SONA said his administration would engage the 8th Parliament on ways to ensure the deal sees the light of day.

He said: “the government will come back to engage the House on the steps it intends to take on the future of the Agyapa transaction”.

A corruption risk assessment report by the former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu concluded that there were breaches in the Public Procurement Act and Public Financial Management Act with regards to how transaction advisors were procured.

Martin Amidu stated that the process raised reasonable suspicion of bid-rigging and corruption.

He also claimed that the procurement of service providers for the transaction also gave rise to possible cronyism, nepotism, and could result in illicit financial activities and money laundering.

He later resigned from his work citing interference from the President.

In his three page letter addressed to President Akufo-Addo, he indicated that his decision is to “enable Your Excellency to take steps to appoint a replacement to that position as required by law.”

According to him, President Akufo-Addo was not been able to ensure his independence and freedom of action.

“The one condition upon which I accepted to be nominated as the Special Prosecutor when you invited me to your Office on 10th January 2018 was your firm promise to me that you will respect and ensure same by your Government for my independence and freedom of action as the Special Prosecutor,” he emphasised.

He stated that the trauma he faced regarding his risk assessment report of the controversial Agyapa deal is not enough reasons for him to bow out as well as interference in other investigations by some State officials.

  • Would the Suspension of COVID-19 vaccines in Austria affect Ghana Negatively?

Would the Suspension of COVID-19 vaccines in Austria affect Ghana Negatively?

The Covid-19 pandemic or diseases caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus has not only caused the down fall of many great economies in the world and over 2 million people worldwide but has also caused fear and panic in almost every living being on this planet.

Aside the fact that, the virus is very destructive, fear has also caused several people to refuse taking in the vaccines that have been approved for emergency use, especially in Ghana.

Even before the Covid-19 vaccines were developed numerous number of people were of the view that they will not take the vaccines if the world is able to develop one. And as at now a lot of Ghanaians have said that they will never take it, despite the fact that the first gentlemen of the land, His Excellency President Nana Akuffo Addo has taken the vaccine.

Currently, Ghana only have access to the 600,000 Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine shots and some important personalities and other citizens have taken their first shots but nothing bad or no unusual side effect has caused serious problems to them.

But in Austria the information received or gotten is a bit worrying. The Austrian government has temporary suspended the inoculations with a batch of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in the country. And this suspension was as a result of a lady who died after taking the vaccine and one lady is currently sick but it is said that she is recovering.

The Federal Office of Safety in Health Care (BASG) revealed that, the suspension decision is taking to found out whether the vaccine caused the the above effects or otherwise.

BASG revealed that, “currently there is no evicdence of causal relationship with the vaccination”.

The above incident in Austria will massively have massive problem in Ghana. Ghana is one the countries that have taken the vaccine shots and due to this the level of fear in the citizens about the Covid-19 vaccine will continue to increase and most people might not take the vaccine anymore.

  • Austria Suspends the Importing of AstraZeneca vaccine after woman’s death

Austria Suspends the Importing of AstraZeneca vaccine after woman’s death

One 49-year-old woman died as a result of severe coagulation disorders, while a 35-year-old woman developed a pulmonary embolism and is recovering.

Austrian authorities have suspended inoculations with a batch of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine as a precaution while investigating the death of one person and the illness of another after the shots, a health agency said on Sunday.

“The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) has received two reports in a temporal connection with a vaccination from the same batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the district clinic of Zwettl” in Lower Austria province, it said.

One 49-year-old woman died as a result of severe coagulation disorders, while a 35-year-old woman developed a pulmonary embolism and is recovering, it said. A pulmonary embolism is an acute lung disease caused by a dislodged blood clot.

Currently there is no evidence of a causal relationship with the vaccination,” BASG said.

Swiss newspaper Niederoesterreichische Nachrichten as well as broadcaster ORF and the APA news agency reported that the women were both nurses who worked at the Zwettl clinic.

BASG said blood clotting was not among the known side effects of the vaccine. It was pursuing its investigation vigorously to completely rule out any possible link.

“As a precautionary measure, the remaining stocks of the affected vaccine batch are no longer being issued or vaccinated,” it added.

AstraZeneca had no immediate comment when contacted by Reuters.

The APA news agency quoted AstraZeneca as saying the company was in contact with Austrian authorities and would fully support the investigation.

It noted the vaccine had been approved by the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization based on a global clinical program involving 23,000 participants.

“All of these evaluations have concluded that the AstraZeneca COVID-19 19 vaccine is safe and effective,” APA quoted the company as saying.

European Union regulators on Jan. 30 approved the product, saying it was effective and safe to use. Adverse reactions seen in trials were short-lived for the most part and blood clotting issues were not reported.

  • Ghanaians Dies from Heart Disease in UK

Ghanaians Dies from Heart Disease in UK

It has emerged that many Ghanaians living in the Greater London area of the United Kingdom are dying from heart related diseases in recent times.
This has been attributed to severe pressure of work, marital issues and also pressures from back home in Ghana which results in people working long hours thereby ending up with heart problems.

A one-year investigation by Graphic Online’s correspondent in London, Nana Sifa Twum has revealed that, an average of 120 Ghanaians living in the Greater London area have died annually within the last three years.

Out of the figure, about 75 percent of them died out of heart related diseases such as Cardiomegaly, Heart failure, Heart arrhythmia, Cardiomyopathy, hypertension, Acute myocardial infarction and aspiration pneumonia among others.

Over 100 copies of their death certificates available to Graphic Online showing they died as a result of heart troubles put their ages between 30 and 60 and mostly male.

In some cases, the over one year-long investigations also revealed that immigration and financial issues triggered the heart problems of the deceased.

Elizabeth, the wife of one James Yaw Owusu, who passed away at the Saint Bartholomew’s hospital in January this year of Cardiomyopathy, told Graphic Online that her husband overworked himself for the past seven years.

James worked more than 14 hours per day for six days every week, she noted.

She said her husband had three jobs of three, seven and four hours each at different places of about seven miles apart and he had to struggle daily to be present at all times.

Juana Manford also told Graphic Online in an interview that she barely saw her late husband at home.

She said, she never set eyes on her husband, Arnold Manford, 48, who died at the Whipp Cross hospital in December last year for four weeks before his death.

“All for him was work, work, work she never met me at home,” she acknowledged.

Last January, Alex, a renowned Ghanaian driver, loved by many Ghanaians, a father of four, was on a taxi attending hospital for a checkup when he suddenly collapsed on the way.

The Irish taxi driver had to call an ambulance crew to attend to him, but he died, before they got to the hospital. His untimely death was attributed to heart failure.

It was also discovered that about 60 percent of the diseased worked with car hiring, security, cleaning and delivery companies.

These areas of work are typically demanding.

For instance, some delivery companies have working policies where their drivers work as self-employed without annual leave and sick pay.

So drivers are compelled to work all the time even when they are sick. If drivers report sick or fail to turn-up for work, for any reason they will be fined. Besides some of them will have to deliver about 200 parcels a day irrespective of traffic situations in the city. Anything short of this will attract a fine.

Some drivers of car hiring companies have no working terms and conditions with the companies they work for and will have to stress themselves to earn reasonable amount for themselves weekly.

A driver, Daniel Danquah said there are certain times that he will have to work continuously for about 18 hours just to make what he will need to survive.

The President of the Reconciliation International, a Ghanaian Welfare and Bereavement charity in the UK, Archbishop Kwaku Frimpong- Manso whose organisation has been in the forefront of funeral arrangement of almost all Ghanaian deaths in the Great London area noted in an interview with Graphic Online that last year alone six Ghanaians died in their rooms unnoticed.

They were rather discovered later after alarms were raised. He noted that two of the bodies had been decomposed.

He disclosed that this year alone, his office has recorded 44 deaths within the Ghanaian community, 38 were heart related.
